The average non-birder likely thinks of seagulls when hearing "shorebirds," but there are so many more species of birds found alongside oceans and lakes: things like sandpipers, plovers, pelicans are but the tip of the iceberg (and avid birders groan inwardly at even considering the vast variety of gulls and their seasonal plumages).
