John's visits to the west coast have given him several chances to see the Black Phoebe.  This one caught him by surprise when it landed on a nearby tree on the walking path around Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad, CA, while John was focused on the antics of several Bushtits.

The blown-out highlights of the out-of-focus twigs in the foreground are a bit of a distraction, but otherwise, the image of this flycatcher is one of John's favorites.
